Rich began playing hockey at age four in Rochester, New York.  He played at all levels from Squirt to Midget travel in Upstate New York and Canada.  Rich was a four year Varsity starter and letterman for the Pittsford High School Hockey Team.  He also played two years in the defunct Metro League with the Rochester Lancers. Coaches who Rich has either played for/or coached with are Skip House,  Don Cherry, Sam Toth , Jim Loventhal and Ray Bradford along with three time Stanley cup winner Mike McEwen. Several of the coaches listed above are in the New York State Hall of Fame. Rich had the distinction of scoring the winning goal in the sectional finals in his senior year.  Rich’s playing career ended with several leg injuries. Rich has been involved in Hockey in the last fifty years as first a player, fan, scout and coach of players at various levels from Squirt to Bantams.

Rich views the development of players to be the most they can be both on and off the ice to be his duty.  Each and every player has his or her role with a team, and Rich tries to get players to understand and accept their role on a team. Plus minus stats are more important than point totals.  Having had a long involvement in Hockey, Rich has seen many systems and styles of play, and teaches a pro style of playing to players.  This style incorporates a read & react basis with an up tempo style of play, which teaches puck control and situational awareness of the developing play around a player.

In 2010-11, Rich was head coach for McKinney's Junior Varsity, Bantam and Squirt teams. Rich has five grandchildren, two of which played for the Mckinney Ice Hockey Club at the Bantam and  Squirt levels in 2010-11.
